If you have spotted a musical trio dressed in trademarked colourful ensemble of blue and red, then you have probably witnessed the energetic Amapantsula Omjovo group that have their eyes feasted on the grand prize i.e. taking the local entertainment industry by storm.
Known for their unique sense of style and musical approach, not to mention their killer dance moves, which sets them apart from any other act currently, they strive to quickly win popular acclaim.
They hail all the way from KwaZulu-Natal in Mtubatuba, a town situated north of Richards Bay and are currently based in Empangeni. Amapantsula Omjovo (AO) consists of Nkanyiso Mlambo, Ngcebo Mthembu and Nkosi Zikahli, also known by their individual stage names Lambo N, Tito Listo and Mastenda respectively. The trio has graced many stages in the province and other parts of the country since 2009, although their official formation was in the year 2016.
The movement started with their breakthrough song ‘Amapanstula Omjovo’ which birthed their name as a group. Speaking to the director of AO, Nkanyiso Mlambo, he helped give us the reason behind the naming process.
“It all started as a song in 2013. We were in studio and our producer started playing a beat with that Pantsula vibe and I came with a tittle Amapantsula on the spot. We then decided we wanted to add something on the tittle of the song for that extra effect, which was Omjovo. The reason behind ‘Omjovo’ was influenced by our then producers’ beat style, which was Mjovo Movement.’’
After parting ways with the record label, AO decided to start their own thing fusing Hip/Hop and Pantsula to create one sound which Lambo N says has worked for the group. Their aim is to attract an audience that resembles their ‘likes, dislikes, priorities, morals and values.’ The formation of Amapantsula has helped them form a solid brotherhood, even though they plan on parting ways musically to focus more on the company and the business side of things.
Among other things, they have created a self-titled record label and formed a formidable brand in designing merchandise, but haven’t signed any artist yet as they are looking to invest in themselves more and growing their business. Fans do not have to worry though as the group is not splitting up but temporarily embarking on their own individual journeys as solo artists.
“The brand Amapantsula Omjovo is now bigger than just being a music group. We’re trying to work on our solo careers so that we can focus more on Amapantsula as a company.”
Sharing the stage with industry greats such as Prince Kaybee, Kwesta and Dream Team, just to name a few, has changed their musical approach and how they navigate through the music industry.
This year has been fruitful and progressive for AO both musically and business-wise. This also allowed them to partake in community projects such as uMhlathuze Kids Talent Development function, and partnered with Sanlam to donate clothes to charities in the area. Their influence has also gotten them invited by the King Cetshwayo District for the 2019/2020 Arts and Culture strategic planning session.
They are working on securing collaborations with DJ Maphorisa, Kwesta, Spikiri and take the maskandi route by working with Shwi Nomtekhala. Lambo N has just dropped his single ‘Dlala Mapantsula’ and Tito Listo is looking to drop before the year ends. The group is embracing this new-age era of music and determined to create their own sound which is not dictated by anyone; staying true to their craft.
