When it comes to planning special celebratory occasions, not many events companies can bring in the chic and glamour that Kwela Events boasts about.
From organizing graduation parties to planning birthday parties, founder and owner, Ntombifuthi Shezi makes sure that she adds a different touch to every event, making it original, special and one to always remember.
We spoke with the 20-year old University of Cape Town’s Politics and English student who first tells of how she juggles her studies and business, whilst also frequently traveling between her home city, Johannesburg and Cape Town. It sometimes gets hectic but she manages to make it work.
Shezi started her events company in 2017 after she successfully organised her mother’s birthday party. Shortly after that, she was planning a few more events for her family and friends – those who trusted her capable hands after doing an incredible job on her first event.
Upon attending a number of different parties and realising that ideas of adding her personal touch overflowed whenever she was present, she resolved to venture into monitezing her skills. The confident and outgoing student has always had a love for hosting, so it seemed appropriate to combine the two and go into the events planning business.
While most of her competitors are armed with qualifications in events management or related courses, Shezi solely relies on her passion and the experience she has gained from working at her mother’s business; a successful bakery in Randburg called Vero’s Cake.
“From doing a few holiday jobs at her shop, I have learnt to work with people and understand the day to day running of a business,” says Shezi.
Currently, she runs Kwela Events alone and her clients are mostly students who want to throw birthday and graduation parties. In addition to these services, she does meal preps for students at her university, which she hopes will become another revenue stream.
Shezi is currently preoccupied with the planning of her 21st birthday party, which will be in April, and is also planning a 60th birthday party that is happening this January.
Her biggest goal with Kwela Events is for it to become an events company that can offer a variety of related services i.e entertainment, photography and catering. She explained that she wishes to see her business booming so much so that she handles even bigger events, like weddings and corporate functions. With the growth and success of her company, she says that she will create employment for other aspirant event coordinators.
