Serving to give a new experience into the fashion world, by providing its customers with sophisticated imports of high quality products, is exactly what the nationwide brand Sebenza Cotton aims to do.
Here at the Ngcobo Empire we had an opportunity to interview the founders, Bongeka Makhathini (24) who has worked together with Sphelele Magwaza (25) to make Sebenza Cotton the online store that it is today.
Establishing their company in October 2017 and finally launching their store in February this year, Makhathini said that the love for fashion has always been there, hence the idea to introduce their taste to the South African market.
“We wanted a different taste more especially amongst young people; we wanted to restore the dignity of young people and the middle aged. Wherever they go, we wanted them to have a unique feel and look,” she said.
Having met at a coffee shop, it was definitely fashion at first sight for the business partners who now enjoy the fruits of their labour. “It has been good for a young upcoming clothing brand. We have had customers from all over the country and Africa at large,” Magwaza said.
A majority of their customers in South Africa are from the province of KwaZulu and the Western Cape, and the process of purchasing an item from Sebenza Cotton is very simple. Orders can either be made online (website, Instagram or Facebook) or directly on their business number. Processing the order, as well as delivery, takes anything between 1-3 working days; depending on your location.
“We have almost everything on our online shop and for all our products. We have photoshoots with South African models unlike other online shops that use pictures from their suppliers and the internet,” Magwaza said. He further explained that they use the models to represent the true reflection of the brand.
The pair does admit that owning an online store is not as easy as it seems. Together, they have learnt to pay attention to detail and to cater thoroughly for the individual needs of their customers because they believe that every customer needs to feel special.
Although there are many guidelines to being successful in this kind of business venture, Makhathini and Magwaza say that the most important aspect for them is feeding on passion and not money. “Running a business is not as luxurious as it seems on television. Being an entrepreneur means that one must be willing to sacrifice even from their own pockets.”
Asked about their brand’s future plans, Makhathini and Magwaza told us that they are currently working with agents from Europe who are going to help them reach greater heights in the future. “We would love to establish the brand as a world recognised brand and associate ourselves with big names,” they said.
