UvoLwethu Communications is a PR Consultancy that was established in 2012 by Mfundo Shozi, with only R1135.50 in his account. The idea to start a PR company became apparent to Shozi during his final year as a Public Relations student at the Durban University of Technology.
At the time, he didn’t know the first thing about running a business, but what kept him going was his desire to create job opportunities for the youth of South Africa.
“Youth unemployment in our country is a serious problem. I want to become part of the solution and inspire young people to also start thinking about pursuing entrepreneurship as a career in order to become job providers rather than job seekers,” Shozi said.
During the fetal stages of UvoLwethu, getting clients was a major challenge. Many people did not believe the company was capable of adding value to their businesses or brand. This was due to the fact that the company did not have resources, references and the infrastructure to run efficiently.
In light of this challenge, Shozi and his team devised a client acquisition strategy which proved to be very effective. The idea was to offer their services (for free) to potential clients for a month and in exchange, these clients would serve as references for the company.
“When we started we had our meetings in our lecture venues, cafeteria, and the library, so our credibility at the time was very low and we overcame these challenges by focusing on the vision of the company.”
UvoLwethu is now a sustainable business which is currently working with ten companies and also has proper infrastructure. Although they are a team of five, Shozi says that they are in the process of adding three new members to the team. They also have an agreement in place with the DUT PR Department to mentor and equip one intern for the coming year.
The growth of the company has resulted in many successes. One of them being the opportunity that Shozi was granted to represent at one of the biggest business seminars in the country, The Money Wealth & Business Conference, in August this year.
“Having the opportunity to speak to the World’s Number One Wealth Coach JT Foxx and share the stage with people such as Ndaba Mandela, Billionaires – Patrice Motsepe, Jenna Clifford and Hugh Hilton in front of over 1800 people is an experience I’ll never forget. And to share my story of how I started the company was a great experience,” he said.
Shozi also advised young entrepreneurs to always know the nature of the problem they are solving, know their Unique Selling Proposition (USP) and have a business model, in order to succeed in their industries.
“It is important to have a branding and marketing strategy in the business. What has really worked for me in my business is having strategic partners and having mentors and coaches. My coach Scelo Mzimela really got me headed in the right direction and I’m grateful to coach JT Foxx for his great advice,” he said.
Apart from being the founder of UvoLwethu, Shozi is also a life coach and an author who is in the process of publishing his self-development book titled “Dream Catcher”. In the book he shares his story and provides strategies and principles that people can implement (in their own lives) in order to overcome obstacles.
“The Book comprises of 6 chapters which are filled with transformation content. I wanted to write a book that would not only motivate people but also provide them with concepts which they can apply in their lives,” he explained.
At the moment, Shozi cannot disclose any information about the launch date and price of the book but promised to make the announcements on his social media accounts in due course.
