It was a stellar occasion at Fred Crookes Sports Centre as the Durban University of Technology unveiled its King and Queen of the institution on Friday, the 11th of August.
The pageant, which was held under the theme ‘identity’, saw Homeopathy student Sanele Memela and Information Technology Software Development student Zandile Langa walk away as the 2017 Mr and Miss DUT winners, respectively.
Speaking to the the newly crowned 2017 Miss DUT, Zandile Langa, she said: “I would like thank everyone that supported me through this journey because I wouldn’t have made it without them. As much as they were not on the ramp with me holding my hand, I carried their words of encouragement in my heart”.
Zandile went on to admit that she and the other ladies gave the judges a difficult task when it was time to choose the winners of the pageant because they are all very beautiful, intelligent and talented.
“Honestly speaking I wasn’t expecting to win this title because all models were just too stunning. They were all equally deserving of the title”, she said.
“I believe in beauty with a purpose and would love to get all the 24 finalists involved in a program where we reach out to students as DUT ambassadors. As much as only two people were crowned as Mr and Miss DUT, we are all ambassadors because 24 minds put together are way better than two”, she added.
The 2017 pair outcompeted twenty-two other hopeful contestants who had surpassed the auditioning phase earlier this year. The likes of Nontuthuko Hlophe (Miss DUT 2017 1st Runner-Up), Sphelele Ngubane (Mr DUT 2017 1st Runner-Up), Sphumelele Gcaba (Miss DUT 2017 2nd Runner-Up) and Lawrence Hlengane (Mr. DUT 2017 2nd Runner-Up) round up the top six winners of the day.
Student Governance and the DUT Student Representative Council (SRC) introduced a few changes for this year’s Mr and Miss DUT. The male models get to keep their Hilton Weiner Classic suits, while the ladies also keep their designer gowns from House of Alfalfa.
On the other hand, according to former Mr DUT, Nkululeko Mbatha, the other participants get an opportunity to form part of the modeling agency, Indoni Models. Under Indoni, they will be granted the opportunity to undergo a coaching and mentorship programme.
Apart from the business of the day, the fully packed Sports Centre also enjoyed music from Proffessor, Touch of Soul, DJ Wonder, Khuzani Mpungose and many other artists.
The event was a production of the Department of Student Governance, Mr Derrick Mhlongo (Indoni models) and the DUT SRC.
