YDC Designers who slayed at the Durban July

Durban was “theee place to be” this past weekend as the Vodacom Durban July (VDJ) took place on Saturday, 01 July 2017. With fashion entertainment, good music, great food & drinks; and of course, the horse races,  it was a sight for sore eyes!

This year’s theme was dubbed ‘The Colour of Magic’. And it was up to every individual to choose how they best interpreted this theme. Our eyes were graced with very attractive designs of dresses, hats and shoes from celebrities and spectators alike. But it wouldn’t have been a complete VDJ without the Young Designers Challenge (YDC).

YDC is a huge event at the VDJ that creates a platform for designers to showcase their talent in a fashion challenge. In the contest, designers who have been selected to compete, are to showcase designs that express or show their interpretation of the theme.

We spoke to a Durban designer, Prince Nsibande of Nxulumakazi Creations, whose design won the Classic Racewear Female Category. He said that he was shocked and excited that one of his designs won, especially because he entered the competition on the very same day.

“I couldn’t apply for Young Designers Challenge… I was very busy to the point where I couldn’t submit all the requirements on time. However, I decided to apply for the female category on the day. I’m very proud that we made top 15 and won the female category,” said Nsibande.

Nsibande’s design, that won the Racewear Female Category, was a blue zipped jersey-like linen top and a white lace skirt. It was accessorized with an orange, black, green, red and white head beaded piece, as well as baby-blue beaded earrings and a colourful beaded figure belt.

Terrence Bray, who was one of the judges, said it was great to see the creativity that these upcoming designers came up with. “The turnout this year was fantastic. It’s good to see new designers showcasing their stuff. The fashion gets better and better every year at this event,” said Bray.

The winners for the best fashion designs were selected in several different categories:

Classic Racewear Female: Prince Nsibande, model Zanele.
Classic Racewear Male: Naseem Nazeer, worn by him.
Exceptional Raceday Hat or Fascinator: Zandile Maphumulo, model Nonhlanzeko.
Most Striking Couple: Catharine Nolan, models Lunga and Kayla.
Fashion Challenge: Tilone Viljoen, model Julia.
Young Designer: Katekani Moreku, model Luvuyo.
