A qualified chemical engineer, who has a deep passion and interest for social development, is on a mission to educate children from one of South Africa’s largest townships, eMdantsane in East London.
In his very own words, Vuyani Majola says that he gets very motivated by seeing a black child excel academically irrespective of his/her family background. His drive is to see black kids excelling in pure Maths & Science. Hence, he’s always trying to secure grants and sponsorship for children that come from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Majola is currently running a ‘Centre of Change’ project that offers the following skills to members of his community, both the young and old:
– Maths, English, Computer Coding and Chess for after-school lessons
– Maths and English Adult Education & Training (AET) level 1 – 3 certificates
– Basic Computer lessons and End user computing for the community at large
He began doing this initiative back in the year 2012 and has been running it from his own pocket since day one. However, Mr Majola did inform us that occasionally he does receive financial assistance from friends and former colleagues who believe in his dream.
“It has been a bumpy but very rewarding journey. This project is always the first thing I think about each time I wake up, and the last thing on my mind before going to bed every night.”
In terms of getting more assistance and an operational boost, Majola explained that he would love to have any Samaritan or Philanthropist donate some cash to cover their monthly rental cost, as well as their annual insurance, telephone and internet costs.
Furthermore, the centre needs at least three Cargo Shipping containers to be converted into classrooms, for use during their week’s homework sessions and planned gardening pilot project – among many other things.
His overall vision through all of this is for the Fresh Hope Entrepreneurship Empowerment Development hub (FHEED pronounced as “feed”) to be located at every Zone / Unit in Mdantsane, whereby every member of this community can access their services within a walking distance.
